Mivek4doddle Project CAI Installation & Updates

I have been a fan of black heatwraps. They just look oldschool to me. Been seeing them allot in Biker's Built-Off shows on Discovery Real Time. I wanted to find DEI brand but they were prolly out stock. So i bought myself a roll of Thermotec Cool-It black graphite (1"x50") heatwrap.

  • Toolbox
  • 2 pieces of stainless steel clamps
  • A bag of black cable-ties
  • Gloves

It took me 1.5 hours to do everything. The gloves were necessary as the wraps were impregnated with graphite and contains fiberglass. The itch will slow down your work definitely. The installation was straight forward. I spent a lot of time wrapping the tube since the tube was slippery and the wraps werent that soft as i expected.

Once wrapped, i had to use the stainless steel clamps for both tube ends. The cable-ties were meant to tighten the wraps since the wrap werent tight enough and i worry that water might sprinkle into it.

Im gonna miss the bling-bling but the project CAI functionality is mandatory.

Part 1 Project CAI is completed. Part 2 will commence in early August 2008.

Thermotec really have good products. Check out their online catalog. http://www.thermotec.com/

Honda Civic Type-R FD2R Crashed (Malaysia)

Last week either Wednesday or Thursday, when i was on the way to work, around 6:15am, i saw this crashed FD2R being flatbedded and heading north to Kuala Lumpur. It looks like its coming from the southern region from the North South Highway.

Today i got these pix from my friend and it looks like the same car i saw the other day. From what i can see looks like the car prolly had spun and hit the divider and landed into the drain.

Hopefully the driver is safe and i think the car will be soon be declared total loss from the looks of it.

Peter's JUN MR-2 : June 2008 Hypertune Magazine

Congratulations to Peter for the Hypertune Photoshoot. The thing that im curious is as far as i have been reading Hypertune for a very long time, I have not seen any East Malaysian cars on the front cover (my recollection can be rusty sometimes but im sure there wasnt any from the eastern side). Why is that? As i know East Malaysia are full with JDM cars and less convereted cars for a start. There are heaps of modificed cars in Sarawak and Sabah as we speak.

I also notice that Peter's JUN tuned MR-2 is not part of the INSIDE list on the front page. If Peter didnt tell me, i wouldnt know the MR-2 will be in this month issue. The rest of the East Malaysian Hypertune readers would not know about it too.

Hypertune can boost up their sales for East Malaysia if things are more informative and graphical attractive. Hypertune magazines seems to be limited and pricey in East Malaysia. Well in Kota Kinabalu alone i have seen the shocking jacked up price between RM20-RM30 in different stores.

Hmm....

J's Racing Air-Duct Replacement Screws

The J's Racing screws came in silver and i reckon it will look ugly on the black air-duct.

So i bought some black screws which costed me RM2.70 per box. I think it comes in 25-30 screws.

More than enough.

Mivek4doddle Project CAI - Installation & Updates

I had some free time during the weekend. Since 80% of my CAI parts were ready, i decided to fit them by myself. I had my tools ready to do some DIY. The process took me around 1 hour for the whole uninstallation of the factory system to the new installation of the CAI parts.

  • The process was straight forward, just that the wires near the fusebox was slightly in a mess. So i had to tie them up nicely with cable ties before fitting the alumnium box.
  • To fit the Samco you need some extra effort and bit of lube to fit the tube and air filter pod.
  • Temporarily, im using the normal gas tube for the oil catch tank to the valve cover breather.

When i start my car, i can hear a strong hissing sound from the airfilter with the hood down. The sound is loud like a vacuum cleaner if you stand outside the car. The response now is quicker and smoother compared to the stock factory box. Compared to the TopFuel tube, i think the TopFuel stores more air inside the plastic chamber since the throttle feeling and responsive are different.

Towards this end of the month :

  • I will need the DEI ceramic coated heatwraps for the stainless steel tube. I will definitely miss the bling-bling. Haha.
  • I will need Goodridge steel braided hoses and finishers for my Sard oil catch tank.

Im having a serious eyesore with my RPW header. The DIY ceramic coating is peeling off due to the fact i bought the wrong heat temperature level spray. Argh!

Air Filter Comparison Test

I think i have read many times about air filter comparison test especially in the Option Fans (Hong Kong) magazine. I think they should do it in different countries in the future. The smog in some big cities are hazardous. In the future, you have to use mini K&N filters inside your nose. Haha.

Izrin gave me this link which i have seen it before :
http://mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/index.html

Based on the link, the only filter i have not tested yet is the Apex'i filter. Maybe i wasnt in luck to use it but im pretty sure im not going to use it since the physical effect after using it for quite sometime has the tendency to crumple like the K&N. Well basically all these filters were designed for maximum performance which means u have to change it every 5-10k kms, no shit.

Dont complain when you start to pay more for fuel and you only change your filter once a year.

As i told Izrin, i chose HKS was due to the fact its cheap to buy the element alone than buying an entire filter. Im thinking of long term and product availability. No bias in my judgement, cheap is always good. Haha.

Mivek4doddle Project CAI Costing

Here is a rough figure to do the super CAI project. If you plan to use used parts or you have parts sleeping in your storeroom then the total cost will be cheaper :
  • New custom stainless steel tube RM2xx
  • New custom aluminium partition + rubber lining RM1xx
  • New SAMCO straight coupling hoses RM1xx
  • New HKS filter series 200 RM4xx
  • New BPi velocity stack RM3xx inclusive import tax
  • New SARD oil catch tank RM2xx
  • New GOODRIDGE steel braided teflon hoses and finishers RM2xx
  • New DEI heatwrap RM3xx
  • New J'S RACING FRP air-duct RM3xx
  • New flexi hoses RM1xx
  • New temporary plastic hoses RM5x

The total cost would be around : RM2xxx

I managed to save a bit since im using back my Sard oil catch tank and Goodridge finishers. I have to get another round of Goodridge steel braided hoses for this new setup. The used HKS SPF pod also managed to cut my budget a bit. The Samco reducers will definitely put a big hole through my wallet and the straight couplings saved my day.

Well its up to you if you want to do it cheaply, expensively, neatly, untidyly and etc. If budget permits i would have done everything in carbon kevlar and call it super-duper CAI project. Haha.

4G92 Mivec + ITBs (Malaysia)

Here is another project 4G92 DOHC Mivec with ITBs. I think this blog has not been updated for quite sometime. Not sure if the project has been successful or not. Hopefully we will see more updates.

Mivek4doddle Project CAI - J's Racing Air-Duct

I believe some of my mates will be grinning when they see this. And i reckon also they will be busy figuring out on how the hell am i gonna fit this on my front bumper.

This is the J's Racing air-duct specially made for the 2-door Honda Civic EG. They make them in 2 models which are the FRP and carbon fiber series. Since i know carbon fiber is nice but turn ugly if you park the car under the sun for too long, so i decided to get the FRP version which is also cheaper. The air-duct is very light and you dont have to worry about weight problem.

I dont intend to drill a hole infront of my bumper koz i did that the last time and i think the amount of air wasnt sufficient to feed the air-filter area. Since this is my so called mega CAI project, i would like to do it properly and using the right parts to channel the air into the engine bay. As you can see from the well designed shape, its definitely big and smooth enough for air to flow in.

They will be some minor modification that needs to be done on the air-duct and on my front bumper. I will be fitting this air-duct after my repaint work which is the second chapter of the CAI project.

I have to find brand new black screws instead of using the ones that came with the air-duct. The silverish screws will look pathetic on a black surface. The double sided tape wont last long with the extreme heat these days even if its 3M brand.

I will decide what sort of material to use for the flexible hose pipe from the air-duct to the air filter. I have a few options already.

This is a sample photo on how it looks like on a 2-door EG. Very nice.

Mivek4doddle Project CAI - HKS SPF

My plan was to buy a brand new 2nd generation HKS SPF. I wasnt lucky this time. They only had the 150 series version for the 2nd generation which was too small for my project. I know it has been discontinued but i was still trying my luck. I wasnt keen on the new HKS Reloaded although the design was suppose to be better to absorb more air compared to the old ones.

So i had to go around and scouted for used ones. Prolly it was my luck that i managed to get a used 200/80 HKS SPF in time. As a rule of thumb, you should never use the element came with the filter. When i took it out, its already dry, hard and dirty. You never know what sort of dirts and oils absorbed by the old element.

I threw away the old element, washed the HKS SPF pod with water and dish washing soap. Let it dry for an hour. Fit the new HKS amber element.

Mivek4doddle Project CAI - HKS Filter Element

I was looking for the original green colour but they were out of stock. Blue colour elements were also out of stock as i thought i wanted to match with the SAMCO hoses colour. He he.

Anyways, this 200 series amber coloured filter element (people call them red colour) is actually the 35th Anniversary HKS filter element. Thanks to Danny for letting me know about it.

HKS replacement filter elements are available in a dry 3-layer, triple density or wet 2-layer, dual density construction. The dry 3-layer type is standard in Super Mega Flow (SMF) Reloaded Intake kits, and is designed for superior filtration while still providing excellent airflow.

The wet 2-layer type is included in HKS Racing Suction kits and is focused on maximizing airflow for performance, yet still keeping harmful particles from the engine.

Since my CAI project will be a direct air system from the front of the bumper which has high dust area, i chose the dry 3-layer elements. Look at the photo and you can see a black center layer that blocks more dust particles to the air filter system.

According to Danny, the new 3-layer was also actually meant for cars that runs on AFM since they are more sensitive than MAP driven cars.

I dont have to worry about 2-layer or 3-layer since im going to run with the damn velocity stack at the track and on dyno. Ha ha.

Mivek4doddle Project CAI - Heatshield, Tube & Oil Catch Tank

  • The air tube is made of stainless steel. I will need the DEI heatwrap to protect it from the engine bay heat.
  • The SAMCOs were the direct coupling hoses. Thank god it fits (with bit of effort needed). If not, i can see a hole through my wallet with the expensive SAMCO reducers.
  • The heatshield is made of aluminium. The sides has been covered nicely with a black plastic rubber lining inserts.
  • As requested, the SARD oil catch tank has been fabricated to fit AN -6 hoses plus a new bracket holder. I am not sure how i am going to connect the breather system yet.

I think most of the things i drew has come out nicely. I would like to thank Hizam for the many ideas he has contibuted to this CAI project. And also i would like to thank GME Bros again for the custom frabrication works.

Mivek4doddle 2008 Annual Engine Bay Shot In Progress

Im planning to get everything done hopefully by July 2008. That means by next month i should already be adding another engine bay shot to the annual engine bay gallery collection.

Things Done :
  • Custom matte black valve cover restoration (before : yellow)
  • SAMCO hoses upgrades (before : SARD)
  • GOODRIDGE steel braided hoses (before : ordinary gas hoses)

Things Removed :

  • SPOON reservoir covers

Future Upgrades :

  • Project CAI system (installation by end of June 2008)
  • Ceramic coated headers (no dateline yet)

If i dont have a power steering system and a air conditioning system, life would be so much easier to clean and have a nice clean wire-tucked engine bay. Unfortunately, having a daily driven street car with full factory parts, its already an obligation to clean it weekly inside out by all means.

Mivek4doddle Project SAMCO

Last March i did some upgrade to almost all my engine hoses from Sard to Samco. The good thing about my engine is that i do not have so many of vacuum hoses (4mm & 6mm) unlike my brother's old B16A. My Sard hoses were starting to get soft and i decided to replace them. It all started with the radiator hoses i installed a long time ago. I told myself to have everything in the same brand, if possible.

The only different is this radiator to reservoir hose. It is thicker both inner and outer diameter. I chose them due to the fact hot water runs through it all the time. Having a good and efficient engine cooling system is my top priority especially living in Malaysia. All i wanted was to ensure the hose that connects to it holds together in long term. Factory hoses are bound to deteriorate in the long run.

As you can see from the photos, i bought a meter long with 8mm inner diameter size. Honestly, they sell by meter length and compared to the vacuum hoses with the same size, these fat hoses are fucken expensive. They are RM2xx/meter. Samco have it in 6-8 colours to suit your liking.

Since the reservoir breather needs a short hose between 4-5 inches, i use the 11mm vacuum hose for this side.

I have noticed typical Honda engine setups in Malaysia are usually fully connected with Samco vacuum hoses. I know they look nice but im not sure if they really-really know which models and sizes to choose for different applications (water, gas and oil).

I did the same hose swap for my brother's car during my last KK visit. The rest he will continue the next round trip.

Engine Bay Polishing (DIY)

Peter did some engine polishing work. I recommended him to use the MeGuiar's aluminium polish.
